On May 16, 2010 a group of people devoted to building the Russian Community in Florida formed the first community center for Russian speakers in Orlando, Florida. The center will offer many useful services to Russian speakers including a library of Russian books, adult English classes, children’s events including Russian classes, community programs and a directory for professional services in Russian ( attorney, doctor, interpreter, tutor, etc). The main focus of the non profit organization is to bring all Russian speakers together for mutual benefit.  ”The actual community has existed for many years but in many ways the interaction of Russian speakers took place in smaller circles that rarely connected with each other.  We want to change that, and see the community grow both socially and physically.” said Jef Gray, Chairman of the Board for the Community Center.

The Russian-American Community Center of Florida is a non profit corporation that draws on the expertise of many Russian community leaders. The 5 member board of directors is a cross section of entrepreneurs, educators and executives from multiple countries. “It’s exciting to be a part of this idea and see how it has become something real.” said Yevgeniya Kapul-Rios, the board treasurer. “We’re a center for Russian speakers from all different countries and that international mix on our board matches the demographics of our community.”

The events of the community will be announced shortly but the timeline is aggressive. Immediately after the organization was formed, plans were discussed for the first and second event. “We know events are what bring people together, and we want cultural experiences that remind people of their heritage or enlighten those who are curious about being a part of the community.” Said Ella Kapul-Jenkins, Vice President of the Board of directors.

There is a strong interest to have programs for children, so they can keep the Russian language alive while living in an English speaking country. “We know children can become bilingual at a very early age if they are taught both languages. We are establishing a place for children to go and practice speaking, reading and writing in Russian. We cannot wait for our school system to do this everywhere,  it’s up to us!” Said Tamara Knight, Center board member.

“The need for assistance to Russians is obvious” added Natalya Illarionova, board secretary. “We know people need help finding a Russian speaking doctor or other types of specialized services. Not everyone can speak English and while there is accommodation for some languages, Russian is rarely  available for things like a drivers test, or business registration. The community center can help all those people and connect providers with clients.”

Membership in the community center will be free of charge. A short registration form is required to establish ongoing contact with the applicants so they are aware of all the benefits and programs offered.
